Trading gold (XAU/USD) on FxPro: find it, size it, exit it
Locate the symbol, size the order with the calculators, and set the exit at the same moment you set the entry.
Finding XAU/USD in the terminal
Find XAU/USD by typing the symbol into the market watch search in MT4, MT5 or cTrader, then right-click and add it to your watchlist so it stays visible. On FxPro Edge the search works the same way. Gold is quoted in US dollars per ounce, one standard lot is 100 ounces, and one pip is 0.01, so a move of one dollar in the price is 100 pips.
With a reference price near 4275.0, a one-pip move on a 0.10-lot position is a small dollar amount, and a one-dollar move is a hundred times that. Get the arithmetic straight before you click: our pip value calculator converts the pip size and lot size into the currency of your account, so you are not doing it in your head at the moment of entry.
If the symbol does not appear, check that metals are enabled for your account type and that you are logged into the correct server. A missing symbol is usually a permissions or server question, not a market question.
Sizing the order before you click
Size the order from the risk you are willing to lose, not from the margin the platform will let you use. Decide the dollar amount you will risk on the trade, decide where the stop goes, measure the distance from entry to stop in pips, and let our position size calculator return the lot size. This inverts the usual habit of picking a lot size and then discovering the risk.
Margin is a separate question from risk. At 1:500, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which is what the position ties up, not what you can lose. The maximum available is up to 1:500 on standard forex accounts, within DFSA/SCA-compliant limits and varying by instrument, but the cap is not a target; a smaller position with a defined stop is the sober choice.
Run the margin calculator alongside the position size calculator so you can see both numbers: what the trade requires and what it can cost. Our profit calculator then shows what the target is worth in your account currency, which is the figure that tells you whether the trade is worth taking at all.
Setting the exit with the entry
Set the stop loss and the take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, so the trade cannot exist without an exit. The stop belongs at the level that would prove your idea wrong, not at a round number that happens to suit your account balance. Place the entry, stop and target, then check the risk in money once more before confirming.
The take profit should be placed where the market is likely to hesitate, and should be at least far enough from entry to make the risk worth taking. If the distance to the target is small relative to the distance to the stop, the trade is poorly shaped regardless of how confident you feel. Our profit calculator shows the reward in cash terms next to the risk.
If you plan to hold the position overnight, remember the swap adjustment and, if you want it removed, ask for the swap-free Islamic account on request. And keep the whole exercise in proportion: gold is a leveraged instrument, FxPro is not locally licensed in the UAE, and the margin figure is the smallest part of what you need to understand before you trade.
Why Several XAU/USD Symbols Appear and How to Pick the Right One
Several XAU/USD symbols appear because each platform lists the same metal under different contract specifications, and you should pick the one whose contract size and trading hours match your plan. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge the symbol name may carry a suffix or a variant label, and each variant can represent a different lot definition or settlement convention. The reference price near 4275.0 will look similar across them, but the margin and swap behaviour can differ. Check the contract specification before you trade, not after.
The symbol that ends in a suffix or sits under a different folder is usually the one routed to the entity serving UAE clients, while the plain name may belong to another jurisdiction. FxPro Global Markets MENA Ltd. is the entity that serves the UAE, and the platform may show more than one gold listing because of that structure. Confirm you are on the listing tied to your account type and leverage cap, which is up to 1:500 on standard forex accounts within DFSA/SCA-compliant limits. Trading the wrong listing can change your margin requirement without warning.
Search the Market Watch or symbol list for XAU/USD, then open the contract specification for each result and compare the contract size, the currency of the profit calculation and the swap terms. One lot is 100 oz on the standard gold contract, so a listing showing a different size is a different instrument. If two listings show identical specifications, choose the one with the quote and trade buttons enabled for your account. Keep that symbol saved in your workspace so you do not switch by accident on a later session.
What One Lot of Gold Actually Represents in Ounces and Currency
One standard lot of XAU/USD represents 100 troy ounces of gold, so the notional value moves by $100 for every $1 change in the price per ounce. At a reference price near 4275.0, one lot carries a notional value of roughly $427,500. That figure is the exposure you control, not the cash you post. A pip on gold is 0.01, so one pip on a standard lot equals $1.00, which is why small price moves translate into meaningful account swings when size is not checked.
The contract size is fixed at 100 oz per lot regardless of your account currency, but the profit and loss are converted into your account currency at settlement. If your account is in AED, the platform converts the USD result using its prevailing rate, so the AED figure will move with the USD/AED peg and the broker's conversion treatment. This is separate from the margin requirement, which is calculated from the notional value and your leverage cap. Do not confuse the two when you size a position.
Because the lot is 100 oz, a 0.10-lot position is 10 oz and a 0.01-lot position is 1 oz. Those fractions are how you keep risk proportionate when the price is near 4275.0 and a single dollar move is already $100 per lot. At 1:500 leverage on standard forex accounts, within DFSA/SCA-compliant limits, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which shows how leverage reduces the cash posted but not the exposure. Always read the contract size on the symbol you selected.
Placing the Stop-Loss in the Same Order Ticket as the Entry
Set the stop-loss in the same order ticket as the entry so the risk is defined before the position exists, rather than added after the fill when emotion and speed take over. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge the pending or market order window includes a stop-loss field, and filling it there means the platform attaches the stop at execution. If you leave it blank and plan to add it later, you are exposed for the minutes between fill and adjustment, and a fast gold move near 4275.0 can cover a lot of ground in that gap.
The stop distance should come from the chart structure and your account risk, not from a round number. With one lot equal to 100 oz and a pip at 0.01 worth $1.00 per standard lot, a 50-pip stop on 0.10 lots risks about $5.00 before costs, so the arithmetic is simple once you know your size. Decide the invalidation level first, convert it to pips, then check that the loss fits your risk budget. The ticket then carries both entry and exit, and the platform enforces the stop even if you close the terminal.
Some order types let you attach a take-profit alongside the stop, and you should use that field at the same time so the trade has both boundaries from the start. If the platform rejects the stop because it is too close to the market, widen it to the minimum distance the symbol allows rather than removing it. Check the order before sending: symbol, volume, entry, stop and take-profit. A stop placed at entry is a decision made calmly; a stop placed after entry is often a decision made under pressure.
Reading the Swap Line on a Gold Position Held Past the Daily Cut
The swap line shows the overnight financing adjustment applied to a position held past the platform's daily cut-off, and on gold it is typically a debit or credit based on the cost of carrying the metal. It appears in the symbol specification as swap long and swap short, expressed in points or account currency per lot per night. Because gold is a financed metal position, the swap is not a minor detail: on a standard lot of 100 oz it can accumulate into a real cost or benefit over weeks, and it is separate from the spread and commission.
The exact swap figures depend on the broker's financing rates, the direction of your position and the day of the week, and they are not fixed for the life of the trade. Wednesday often carries a triple swap to account for the weekend, which can materially change the cost of a multi-day hold. You can see the current values in the contract specification before you trade, and the platform posts the actual charge in the account history after the cut. Read both so you know what the position costs to keep.
A swap line does not change your entry decision, but it changes the economics of holding. If you plan to keep a gold position open for days or weeks, compare the swap long and swap short figures and factor them into your target, because a position that looks profitable on price can be eroded by financing. On a 0.10-lot position the nightly charge is proportionally smaller, but the direction of the line still matters. Check it before you leave a trade open over the cut, especially ahead of a weekend.
How Leverage and Margin Interact With the Gold Contract on UAE Accounts
Leverage is a cap on borrowed exposure, not a target, and on UAE accounts the maximum is up to 1:500 on standard forex accounts within DFSA/SCA-compliant limits, varying by instrument. For gold, the margin requirement is derived from the notional value of 100 oz per lot at the prevailing price near 4275.0. At that cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which is the cash set aside, not the amount at risk. The difference between margin and risk is the first thing to understand before increasing size.
Margin is calculated by the platform at the moment of the order and can change if the price moves or if the broker adjusts the requirement for the instrument. A position that uses a small fraction of your equity in margin can still lose far more than that margin if the stop is wide. This is why sizing from risk, not from available margin, is the safer habit. The leverage cap does not protect you from a gap or a fast move; it only sets the minimum cash the broker requires you to hold.
Funding the account in AED through a local UAE bank transfer, card or e-wallet does not change the margin calculation, which is done in the instrument's terms and converted as needed. Keep a buffer above the minimum margin so a normal gold fluctuation does not trigger a margin call. If you trade more than one position, the platform aggregates margin across them, and gold's notional size means it can dominate that total. Check the margin figure on the ticket before sending, and treat the leverage cap as a ceiling you rarely need to reach.
What the Platform Shows After the Fill and Where to Verify It
After the fill, the platform shows the position in the trade tab with the entry price, volume, current price, swap, commission and profit, and you should verify each line against the order you intended. On gold the profit figure moves in $1.00 increments per pip on a standard lot, so a position showing a small dollar change is consistent with a one-pip move. If the volume or entry price differs from the ticket, close the position and investigate before adding anything else. The trade tab is the record, not the order window.
The swap column will show zero until the daily cut, then update with the financing charge or credit, and the commission column reflects the cost charged at execution. These are the costs that sit alongside the spread, and they are the reason a trade can be flat on price but negative on the account. Check the history tab after closing to see the final breakdown, including any conversion into AED if your account is denominated that way. The history is where you confirm what the trade actually cost.
Verification is a habit, not a one-off: after every fill, confirm symbol, volume, stop and take-profit are present and correct, and that the margin used matches your expectation. If the stop is missing, add it immediately in the same trade window rather than waiting. The platform will not warn you that a stop was left off, and gold near 4275.0 can move quickly. A ten-second check after each entry prevents the most common operational mistake on the gold symbol.
